CARRIOCAS project organized on March 22nd the workshop “High bit rate networks for simulation and virtual prototyping: Opportunity and requirements” which gathered a large panel of stakeholders of different industrial applications to discuss the needs for access to remote resource and the resulting network constraints.
In the framework of competitivity cluster system@tic, the CARRIOCAS project studies and implements in Paris area a very high bit rate optical network (up to 40 Gb/s per wavelength) adapted to high performance distributed applications. Project partners planned to experiment on this network two applications requiring very high bit rate connexions: A distributed storage system of massive data and an application of very high resolution remote collaborative visualisation (image wall). Beyond these pilot experiments, the project is more generally willing to investigate and favour distributed applications enabled by high bit rate in scientific and industrial domains.
In that perspective, the project organized on March 22nd the workshop “High bit rate networks for simulation and virtual prototyping: Opportunity and requirements” which gathered a panel representative of different applications in aeronautics, geology and petrol prospecting, banks, pharmacy, energy, visualisation to discuss the following points:·
- Interest and feasibility of the externalisation of computing and storage resource through a network·
- Typology of distributed applications, factors of differentiation (number of sites and users, data volumes, sequence of application sessions, capacity to plan the phases, level of interactivity …)·
- Requirements on the quality of service at network level: constraints of bandwidth, latency, connectivity dynamics ….

This workshop allowed CARRIOCAS partners to share their investigations with the external invited attendees to jointly elaborate a point of view enlarged to a greater number of applications. The following companies or laboratories were present or represented : Alcatel-Lucent, C&S, CEA, CEREP, Dassault aviation, EDF, i-Source-Gestion, IEF, IFP, INRIA, MEDIT, ONERA, Platform, PRISM, RENATER, Supelec, TechViz, Total. CARRIOCAS project submitted to the attendees a questionnaire for the analyze of the needs for access to remote resource and of the resulting network constraints. This requirement analysis feeds the project investigations in terms of network architecture adapted to distributed applications.

This first workshop had also the vocation to initiate contacts to build a “club” of CARRIOCAS partners in application domain to carry on the exchanges on these questions during the project developments and to get the feedback of these privileged contacts on the results of the project.
